1438 - Donna Leon
I read a large variety of authors and have a big batch of favorite characters, and today I surprised myself. I am reading Donna Leon's newest novel set in Venice and centering on the life of her detective Guido Brunetti. I realized, without prompting, that of all the characters I admire and follow, the one person I would like to be is Brunetti. He is a rounded, authentic person, a man who is kind and principled. He has a wonderful wife and interesting teenage children. He treats everyone in a manner that respects his humanity, and he is largely treated well by those around him. He has a moral center that is much more personal attraction than most literary characters. Put simply, I would like to be Guido Brunetti, and I am grateful for the talent of Donna Leon in creating him.
