1536 - Pierre, or the Ambiguities
The longest row I ever hoed reading a book by a great writer was Melville's "Pierre, or the Ambiguities." It was just a terrible read, At the same time I recognize that its ideas and intentions were superb and central to understanding Melville. It's a pity no whale chase was involved. Do you have a book that was a horror to read but that you know you had to do it for the ideas of the experience? I bet none of you have read "Pierre."
