Nobody Ever Tells Me Anything

There has been another horrendous attack, this one in Pakistan, by Taliban suicide bombers, who raided a school and killed about 140 people, mostly children. All the bombers wore suicide vests and all died. Every time this happens we are forced to think unthinkable things. One is wondering how innocent people (in this case elementary school age children) become fair game for terrorism. There seem to be no remnants of soul in these bombers, no shred left of the human spirit, any more than when a pride of lions take on a gazelle as a coordinated killing unit. The other is wondering how these killers can willingly strap on a bomb and go out to kill themselves. There is a deep and fundamental insanity in all of this, and it does not seem to be abating as more deaths pile up. With all the torture debate going on in the U. S., we start wondering if the only way to stop the fanatics is with actions equal in evil to those we are trying to stop. There is an Old Testament viciousness involved here, a refusal to admit the individual value of people. Can we live by our own values and still sustain ourselves in conflict with unspeakable evil?
