Interesting words - Ruth Rendell

How many times, I wonder, did I climb and descend the staircase in the House of Stairs that long afternoon? How many times did I retreat to the garden and return to the drawing room? In times of stress I find remaining still very difficult; I need to fidget, to sit down, stand up, pace, wander to windows and gaze out of them...
Time stood still for me the way it stands still when you long for it to pass.
