Interesting words - Gail Sheehy
Guilt is responsibility for committing some offense or failing in one's duty. shame is more intimate, a painful emotion caused by falling beneath one's minimum standards of human behavior or status... Dr. Peter Neubauer, an eminent Freudian analyst, finds it striking that patients confess their guilt with more ease than they can reveal their shame. They will explore almost anything -- how they hate their parents or dream of killing those who oppose them or entertain sadomasochistic sexual wishes -- but they hide as long as possible that they may have stolen a few dollars as a child. That is shame.
