Interesting words - Gail Sheehy

There seem to be distinct stages through which one must pass to regain identity and flourish in a new culture, and the centerpiece of all of them relates to learning the language. During the first, the ROTE PERIOD, one simply repeats words and phrases and begins programming the brain. A new learner in the rote period is a stumbler in the dark, no light, no map. He or she must proceed by sound. But any new language SOUNDS unnatural, its words arbitrary... Or as comedian Steve Martin expresses the frustration of this stage: "The French, they have a different word for everything!"
