Interesting words - Rebecca West

His Scottish accent was horrid, like the Edinburgh keelies you heard hawking at one another when you went down the Canongate to Holyrood. Scottish people, if they were horrid, did do that. It was part of a determination to be funny though they could not think of anything really funny to say, and that was part of a determination to be better than other people, though they were not.
